The Four Emotions That Can Lead to Life Change

The Four Emotions That Can Lead to Life Change

by Jim Rohn

Emotions are the most powerful forces inside us. Under the power of emotions, human beings can perform the most heroic (as well as barbaric) acts. To a great degree, civilization itself can be defined as the intelligent channeling of human emotion. Emotions are fuel and the mind is the pilot, which together propel the ship of civilized progress.

Which emotions cause people to act? There are four basic ones; each, or a combination of several, can trigger the most incredible activity. The day that you allow these emotions to fuel your desire is the day you’ll turn your life around.

DISGUST
One does not usually equate the word “disgust” with positive action. And yet properly channeled, disgust can change a person’s life. The person who feels disgusted has reached a point of no return. He or she is ready to throw down the gauntlet at life and say, “I’ve had it!” That’s what I said after many humiliating experiences at age 25. I said, “I don’t want to live like this anymore. I’ve had it with being broke. I’ve had it with being embarrassed, and I’ve had it with lying.”

Yes, productive feelings of disgust come when a person says, “Enough is enough.”

The “guy” has finally had it with mediocrity. He’s had it with those awful sick feelings of fear, pain and humiliation. He then decides he is “not going to live like this anymore.” Look out! This could be the day that turns a life around. Call it what you will: the “I’ve had it” day, the “never again” day, the “enough’s enough” day. Whatever you call it, it’s powerful! There is nothing so life-changing as gut-wrenching disgust!

DECISION
Most of us need to be pushed to the wall to make decisions. And once we reach this point, we have to deal with the conflicting emotions that come with making them. We have reached a fork in the road. Now this fork can be a two-prong, three-prong, or even a four-prong fork. No wonder that decision-making can create knots in stomachs, keep us awake in the middle of the night, or make us break out in a cold sweat.

Making life-changing decisions can be likened to internal civil war. Conflicting armies of emotions, each with its own arsenal of reasons, battle each other for supremacy of our minds. And our resulting decisions, whether bold or timid, well thought out or impulsive, can either set the course of action or blind it.

I don’t have much advice to give you about decision-making except this: Whatever you do, don’t camp at the fork in the road. Decide. It’s far better to make a wrong decision than to not make one at all. Each of us must confront our emotional turmoil and sort out our feelings.

DESIRE
How does one gain desire? I don’t think I can answer this directly because there are many ways. But I do know two things about desire:

A. It comes from the inside not the outside.
 B. It can be triggered by outside forces.

Almost anything can trigger desire. It’s a matter of timing as much as preparation. It might be a song that tugs at the heart. It might be a memorable sermon. It might be a movie, a conversation with a friend, a confrontation with the enemy, or a bitter experience. Even a book or an article such as this one can trigger the inner mechanism that will make some people say, “I want it now!”

Therefore, while searching for your “hot button” of pure, raw desire, welcome into your life each positive experience. Don’t erect a wall to protect you from experiencing life. The same wall that keeps out your disappointment also keeps out the sunlight of enriching experiences. So let life touch you. The next touch could be the one that turns your life around.

RESOLVE
Resolve says, “I will.” These two words are among the most potent in the English language. I WILL. Benjamin Disraeli, the great British statesman, once said, “Nothing can resist a human will that will stake even its existence on the extent of its purpose.” In other words, when someone resolves to “do or die,” nothing can stop him.

The mountain climber says, “I will climb the mountain. They’ve told me it’s too high, it’s too far, it’s too steep, it’s too rocky, it’s too difficult. But it’s my mountain. I will climb it. You’ll soon see me waving from the top or you’ll never see me, because unless I reach the peak, I’m not coming back.” Who can argue with such resolve?

When confronted with such iron-will determination, I can see Time, Fate and Circumstance calling a hasty conference and deciding, “We might as well let him have his dream. He’s said he’s going to get there or die trying.”

The best definition for “resolve” I’ve ever heard came from a schoolgirl in Foster City, California. As is my custom, I was lecturing about success to a group of bright kids at a junior high school. I asked, “Who can tell me what ‘resolve’ means?” Several hands went up, and I did get some pretty good definitions. But the last was the best. A shy girl from the back of the room got up and said with quiet intensity, “I think resolve means promising yourself you will never give up.” That’s it! That’s the best definition I’ve ever heard: PROMISE YOURSELF YOU’LL NEVER GIVE UP.

Think about it! How long should a baby try to learn how to walk? How long would you give the average baby before you say, “That’s it, you’ve had your chance”? You say that’s crazy? Of course it is. Any mother would say, “My baby is going to keep trying until he learns how to walk!” No wonder everyone walks.

There is a vital lesson in this. Ask yourself, “How long am I going to work to make my dreams come true?” I suggest you answer, “As long as it takes.” That’s what these four emotions are all about.

Not Blogging? What’s Your Excuse?

Writing a blog for your company is possibly the easiest kind of writing you will encounter, yet many entrepreneurs are afraid to dip their toes into the “blogosphere,” as the world of blogging is sometimes referred to.

I don’t think it’s necessary to explain what a blog is. But to be clear, I’m referring to online “columns” that individuals or companies write and post for others to read, often as part of their own website but sometimes completely independent of a website. There are many writing styles to choose from, so you can pick whatever works for you. That’s one reason blogs are so easy to produce.

Interestingly, at a small-business expo held earlier this year in Orange, Calif., more than two-thirds of those polled said they regularly read blogs written by others. In contrast, fewer than one-third said they were bloggers themselves.

Of all the types of new media that exist today (think Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn), jumping in by writing a blog gives the business owner the most control, the most flexibility and–potentially–the most satisfaction. I sometimes wonder why our agency has a difficult time persuading executives–of any size company–to “give it a go.”

After reviewing the reasons I have been given, I’ve identified seven primary ones cited by entrepreneurs for not sitting at a keyboard and pumping out blog posts. Let’s take a look at these seven “excuses.” I think you’ll see that blogging is not only easy, but potentially a key tool in your marketing toolbox.

Reason No. 1: I’m not a good writer. How can I write a blog?
Bloggers do not need to follow strict rules of writing–each blog has its own style. You can feel free to adopt your own style, tone and content, including a conversational style–a blog is one place where that is appropriate. Yes, you do need to know basic rules of grammar, punctuation and spelling, but this knowledge should be utilized in all writing you do in the business world, whether it is a business letter, e-mail or internal memo. Blog writing is more forgiving when it comes to style. If you can write a business letter, you can certainly write a blog.

Reason No. 2: I don’t have time to constantly update a blog, so why even start one?
Frequency is not critical with a blog–what is more important is consistency. You can decide to add blog posts on a weekly or even a semi-weekly basis, as long as you maintain this rhythm. Make sure you set a pace that works for your schedule. If you can handle short daily posts, go for it. Frequency is good. But if you know that is not likely, pick a frequency that is doable, and just get started.

Reason No. 3: Other people in my company could write a blog. Why should I get involved?
Yes, blogs can be written by anyone in the company, and we encourage executives to create a blog using the people resources that make the most sense in their particular company. However, having the president/CEO perspective can be a valuable addition to a blog posted on your company website. So don’t dismiss this opportunity even if there are others who could handle this task.

Some very successful blogs have multiple people contributing, so consider this as a possibility. Perhaps the best situation for your company is to identify a half-dozen bloggers who can take turns on a regular basis. For example, if you set a twice-weekly rhythm, with six bloggers, each of you would write one post every three weeks–not too difficult!

Reason No. 4: I don’t know what to write about.
This is something most bloggers deal with at least occasionally; coming up with interesting blog posts can be a challenge. I guess this would be called “blogger’s block.” If you take time to plan ahead and create a blog schedule, i.e., an “editorial calendar” in which you think of topics for blog posts in advance, you can minimize your blogging anxiety. Often the most difficult part is not the writing, but simply coming up with topics. Pre-planning topics–and then adding the spontaneous ones that naturally occur to you–will be a tremendous help.

I suggest you carry around a little notebook and jot down ideas as they occur to you or put them on your iPhone‘s notebook feature, so you don’t forget them. Look for topics that crop up in your daily life, whether it be conversations with co-workers or family, e-newsletters or industry articles you read.

Reason No. 5: I can write a blog, but I don’t think anyone will find it.
Marketing your blog is just as important as writing it. You will end up talking to yourself if you don’t push your blog out to the people you want to see it. There are a number of ways to market your blog. First, encourage people to sign up at your blog site for an RSS feed (Real Simple Syndication), which sends each new blog post from you directly to their e-mail inboxes. You don’t have to wait for them to come to you–instead, you go to them on a regular basis.

Next, you can cross-promote your blog in all of your other marketing outreach, from adding the URL in your signature block on e-mails to pushing a link through your other social media channels, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn (where there is a specific application that lets you easily link to your blog so it shows up to all of your LinkedIn contacts when they look at your profile).

A third marketing method is to make sure you have a robust “blog roll”–the list usually found on the right side of your blog that includes links to other blogs that you, personally, find interesting or relevant to your own blog. Often, these bloggers will do a reciprocal post of your link on their own site, creating a wider and often highly relevant audience for your blog.

Reason No. 6: OK, maybe they can find it, but I don’t think anyone will want to read what I have to write about.
Again, this is a commonly expressed reason for not blogging. If you are an entrepreneur, it goes without saying that you have something interesting, or at least informative, to say. Your blog can be about your particular business expertise, your experiences getting your company running and/or your ongoing travails, a glimpse into your company’s corporate culture or even your own your thoughts and comments on the world around you. You can be humorous, provocative, informative, entertaining–you choose the style you want and what types of readers you wish to attract. A lot of blogs have very narrow and limited audiences–and this is probably not very helpful for them from a business standpoint. But if you create a distinctive tone for your blog, and you market it diligently, you will find that people read it. You do have interesting things to say, or you wouldn’t be in business.

Reason No. 7: I don’t see how writing a blog can help my business.
Ah, this is the excuse that we hear over and over. And it’s the hardest for us to overcome. Writing a blog, and getting business value from it, is a process. No one should think that writing a blog will immediately jumpstart her business success. However, a regular blog with relevant and interesting posts will give you a superb vehicle through which to tell your own tale–without having to wait for “traditional media” to decide that you’re worth a story.

You control the entire process and, over time, your messages will be carried to your target audiences via your blog posts. It can take weeks, months or even years for the impact to be visible, even though the process is working and your messages are getting read.

The sooner you begin your blog, the sooner this direct marketing vehicle can begin working for you and your company.

The Power of Affirmations

zen garden

Repeating affirmations is a self-talk method that can affect and change behavior and habits. This is an effective method for self improvement and for improving one’s life, because the subconscious mind accepts and regards often-repeated thoughts, statements or self-talk as commands. The subconscious mind does not make distinctions between negative and positive thoughts and self-talk, and treats them both in the same way, which means that you have to be careful to choose only positive affirmations

If you pay attention to what is going in your mind, you will discover that the mind is a constant state of thinking. There is a constant self-talk activity going on. You can use this self-talk to your advantage, when you know how. You can fill your mind with positive thoughts, and direct it toward achievement and success. You can do so by repeating positive words and statements, instead of occupying the mind with useless or negative thinking.

To affirm means to “make firm”, which means making your desired desire or goal firm or real. It is a process of making positive statements about your goal. A statement that is often repeated, affects the subconscious mind, which then uses it enormous power to find ways to make it come true.

You reap whatever your conscious mind sows into your subconscious mind. Your often repeated thoughts and words shape your character and your life, according to whether they are constructive or destructive.

Here are some basic guidelines for repeating affirmations – positive self talk:

1. Always phrase your affirmations in the present tense. You want to achieve your goal now, not in some indefinable future. For example, if your goal is to find a job, don’t say, “I will have a job”, using the future tense. Say, “I have a well-paying and wonderful job, which I love and enjoy”.

2. Use only positive and constructive words, describing what you really want to attain or achieve.

3. Be specific. Tell your mind exactly what it is that you want.

4. It is advisable to keep the affirmations short and easy to remember.

5. You should also include feelings and strong desire. You should feel and believe that what you are saying is already true. Feelings and emotions give life to your words.

6. You may repeat affirmations at any time you want or at special set times during the day. Immediately after waking up and before falling asleep are two very appropriate times, as at these times it is easier to get to the subconscious mind.

7. You may repeat affirmations aloud, mentally or by writing them down.

These are just basic instructions, but they will surely bring you results, if you follow them sincerely.

10 Must-Have Qualities for Business Success

There are distinct qualities that separate seriously committed entrepreneurs who win BIG from everybody else in the pack. The good news is that leaders are not born, they´re made. The list below is designed so you can quickly learn from the best leaders of our time, and model after their success.

1. Ambition and Drive. Giving you the energy you need to hurdle obstacles and tackle the seemingly impossible tasks. Unstoppable Determination bringing you through the rough times when all hope seems lost. Perseverance by holding onto the vision / mission / core values of your business / life. Giving you the energy to evaluate each situation in an objective manner, always pulling you in the right direction.

2. Disciplined work ethic and high standards for quality. This includes traits such as honesty, integrity, and a concern for people. When you put your all into everything you do with an emphasis on quality, you will essentially be putting your personal seal of excellence on your products or services. In your pursuit of obtaining quality, focus on “Being Effective”. This means you are doing the RIGHT things, and therefore focusing your energy in the right direction. 80% of your time should be focused on “running the business” instead of allowing the business to run you.

3. Courage & Action-Orientation. When you are Optimistic enough to take risks that others are unwilling to take, this will set you up for huge returns. Be sure you evaluate all aspects of the situation and take educated risks, but take the risks! If it did not take courage, then everyone would be doing it. Courage is not a feeling. It is a decision. True courage is pushing forward, even though you may have experienced a setback or a “failure” the last time you tried something new / different. If you are not afraid of “failing” you will possess the ability to continually takes risks until one of them turns into your endless pot of gold.

4. Self Confidence. Otherwise known as “The Right Attitude” in every aspect of your business and life. This is probably the one trait that is fundamental and critical for long term success. It allows you to adhere to the fulfillment of your goals every minute of the day because you are confident that you will obtain the results you seek.

Evidence of a truly positive and self-confident person is seen in personal responsibility. Blaming is not in a self-confident person´s vocabulary. Positive people are proactive in everything they undertake. They don´t blame the economy, bad luck, a bad relationship, the weather, “unlucky” situations, the market or their employees. Proactive people figure out how they can personally change, instead of focusing their energy on where others should change.

5. Servant Leadership. The ability to make decisions, regardless of popular opinion in accordance with your business vision, while inspiring those around you to follow through on the direction you set in motion. (Some call this “Delegation” I prefer to call it “Inspiration”. Think about it. Do you like to be Delegated to, or Inspired?) The leaders who are able to make sound decisions at rapid speed are those who know what the “end result looks like”. They have seen the finish line, and know the excitement of crossing it first. Servant leaders are those who come up beside their team members where ever they are, teach those people how they can cross the finish line and experience the same joy and excitement as if they had crossed the finish line themselves.

6. A Creative mind. The ability to “think on one´s feet” is critical if you are committed to a high level of success. The ability to change when necessary. Controlled Flexibility is a key component to success. There must be structure and systems in place right from the start in order to create a self-sustaining operation and to ensure you are not simply “changing for change sake”.

7. A complete understanding of your gifts / strengths / talents and behavioral style. When you know yourself better than anyone else, you will be able to control the situations you allow yourself to be involved in. When you know others better than they know themselves, you will be able to take the right approach when working with them.

This will give you the advantage, because you have accelerated your knowledge and now have the edge you need to succeed in all your business transactions. (If someone else knows you better than you know yourself, you will continually find yourself “in a mess” wondering how you got there.)

8. The sincere desire to understand and help people, putting their needs above your own. When you find unique ways to help enough other people WIN, you will get what you need as a result. Discover ways to give other people what they are seeking in an entertaining style, and you will set yourself apart from your competition.

Positive relationships in all areas of your life will accelerate your business success. In this day and age, “soft skills” are more important than technical skills, especially for business owners. (If you get it right in the small areas of your life, you´ll get it right on a larger scale as well. The results you experience in your personal life will be multiplied in your business life, whether positive or negative.)

9. Kick it up a Notch! Gain and maintain a positively high level of belief for everything that is possible. Set lofty goals and expand your personal vision for what it possible. The leaders who set and evaluate their goals regularly are the ones who achieve more tan 92% of the population combined!

Once a goal is obtained, high achievers raise the bar incrementally again and again. They are not afraid of failure because failure for the common person is just a learning experience for an achiever. Achievers continually set goals despite the uncertainty of whether it looks at the time like they can accomplish the goal or not.

10. Giving Back. The companies who give a minimum of 10% to worthwhile charities or causes, and contribute to their community will be the ones who experience an over abundance of blessings in their business – often from unexpected sources. This is a fundamental law of finance that has been proven time after time. These are the people who attract clients to them instead of always “marketing to clients” trying to chase clients down.

Top 10 Ways to Use Twitter for Marketing

by Jason OConnor
Web Consultant
1. Use it to promote new pieces of content you or your company create to drive traffic to your site. From online articles to blog posts or from videos to webinars, each time you add something to the Web that is of value, tweet about it and include a link. (Most people on Twitter use www.TinyURL.com to take a long URL and make it short.)

2. Use it for learning new marketing ideas, strategies and techniques. If you follow the right people, and you have to be picky about who you follow, you’ll get pointed to a good amount of useful tutorials, videos, e-zines and other things that teach you about marketing.

3. Use it to get new customers. Use Twitter’s search to find people who may be interested in your product or service. There are many ingenious ways to search for people on Twitter. For example, if you sell red widgets you could go to http://search.twitter.com and find people who have tweeted specifically looking for red widgets. To do this, type the following into the search box: red widgets?

• You’ll notice a lot of the results will be of others selling red widgets. These ones will all obviously have links in them to direct people to the site they’re selling red widgets on. To weed these people/tweets out, use the negative sign like this: -http red widgets?

• Since every link has ‘http’ in it, using the negative sign in front of it will cause your search results to not include any tweets with links in them.

4. Use it to build your email list. Use Twitter’s search to find people who may be interested in the monthly newsletter you send out to your house email list. Invite these people to join.

5. Utilize Twitter plugins or add-ons such as TweetMyBlog or The Twitter Updater, which both automatically make tweets of every new blog post you publish. Also check out TwitThis. When visitors to your website click on the TwitThis button or link, it takes the URL of the Web page and creates a shorter URL using TinyURL. Then visitors can send this shortened URL and a description of the web page to all of their followers on Twitter. Finally, look at TweetLater, a service that allows you to write lots of tweets at once and then schedule them to go out over time.

6. Use it to build buzz about an upcoming product or website launch.

7. Use it to better brand yourself or your business. Remember, when someone wants to learn more about you or your company, they are increasingly using sites like Twitter for research. You could easily use Twitter to establish yourself as an authority in your field.

8. Use it to update followers on breaking news regarding your company. If your company is mentioned in a new article, tweet about it and include a link to the article. Or if you’re at a conference or trade show, you could tweet what you’re doing and invite people to visit you in person.

9. Use it for business networking, master-mind groups (see Napoleon Hill), and getting yourself seen by high-profile people in your industry.

10. Use it as an instant messaging system to keep you and your team on the same page during projects. This is especially useful for those who work with teams spread out in different cities or countries.

You should note that this top 10 list is not in order of importance or in any particular order. I suggest that you give Twitter a try if you haven’t already. See if you can apply a few of these techniques and tactics to help you take advantage of Twitter as a marketing tool.

And one more important thing to remember is that there is no silver bullet in marketing. You should always be trying and implementing numerous tactics when marketing your business. Don’t only rely on Twitter or any other one thing. Instead, use Twitter (or any other Web 2.0 site) as simply one more tool in your entire social media and marketing toolbox.

People Buy for 7 Reasons

By: Cindy Schulson

People often confuse the two or assume they are one and the same.

Ann Sieg provides a great definition:

You use marketing to bring you qualified prospects and use sales to close the deal and build relationships with people.

In other words, the definition of marketing is everything you do to reach and persuade prospects to give you a chance to sell them. Sales is what you do to close the sale and get a signed agreement or contract.

In the world of internet marketing, the marketer drives people to the website, and the sales person is the one who forms a relationship with the prospects and closes the deal.

Good marketers and sales people have one thing in common: they both begin by putting their customers first and developing strong customer relationships.

To be effective at both marketing and sales, you need to identify your target market and understand their needs.

What are their hot buttons and core emotional desires? People buy with their emotions and justify with logic. So before you start rattling off a bunch of features, ask yourself, “”what does it mean to them specifically and how will it benefit them?”

Seven Reasons People Buy

Good marketing and sales start with understanding what your customer wants.

If you know what people want, then you’re 90 percent of the way there.

So how do you find out what people want?

Talk to people one-on-one. Listen to the requests they make, the questions they ask and their complaints. Also, look at the information they make public on forums, blogs and other social media. These are a goldmine of information about what people want.

Supplement your research with an understanding of the 7 reasons people buy:

1. Make money
2. Save money
3. Save time
4. Save effort
5. Improve health
6. Increase pleasure
7. Elminate pain

Why Don’t People Buy from You?

In most cases, negative emotions are a lot more powerful than positive emotions. Too often, sales focuses on why people should buy from you vs. why people don’t buy from you.

There are typically four reasons people won’t buy from you.

1. They don’t know you
2. They don’t want what you’re selling
3. They don’t want what you’re selling more than what they would have to give up to get it
4. They don’t believe you

Make their concerns and doubts the focus of your attention first.

This is especially important in network marketing, given how skeptical most people are about this industry.

Its funny that most network marketing companies say “we don’t sell products we just share information”. That helps people who are afraid of sales feel less intimidated by the process. But the truth is that network marketing does involve sales. It also requires marketing.

Be honest, upfront and straightforward with people. Not only will this earn trust, but it will allow you to differentiate yourself. The bigger you make your claims (about your business or product), the more you blend in with everyone else. Tone down your claims and show genuine concern for people’s interests. Its a win-win solution.

6 Ways to Market Your Business on Facebook

By Lakisha Copeland

Facebook is one of the most effective FREE marketing strategies (similar to MySpace) if you know what you are doing! Unfortunately not everyone knows how to market on Facebook effectively. I was listening to a good friend of mine audio series today “The 10K per Month Attraction Marketing Blueprint.”

He said “Look at what everyone else is doing and do the complete opposite.”

When I look at my Facebook newsfeed I see everyone promoting their latest and greatest business opportunity to anyone who will listen, and even to those who don’t.

I see the same marketer’s promoting something else next month.  I also see the same marketers in about 5 to 10 different programs and trying to promote them all at the same time.  If you want to be successful at social media, you have to first become a “marketer” and not a “peddler.”

Peddlers are people who lurk around do a little bit here and quit.  Then they bombard scam.com calling MLM a scam and everything that look like it a scam.

A marketer is constantly promoting themselves and creating their brand.  A marketer persists until they succeed.  A marketer doesn’t stop, a marketer keeps going.

You need to promote You Inc. and not you’re Business Inc.

I see network marketer’s being what I like to call “Program Hoppers.”  You never know what business they are going to pitch; because it is always something different.

It comes back to Attraction Marketing- this is the only way if you want to get the best results from Facebook.

In this post I am going to cover 6 tips for marketing on Facebook:

Step 1- Adding Friends– Most people add friends by adding high rollers such as Mike Dillard and then add all his friends.

Remember we are doing the exact opposite.  Go to different network marketing groups and also see if there are any groups on “the secret.”

Add 30 people a day; so you will not get in trouble with the Facebook Police.

Step 2- Groups– Most people add themselves to as many groups as possible and post their link to their business opportunity.

Add yourself to groups of great influence.  Post to the group wall a “funded proposal.”

If the group allows videos and links, add those to the group as well.

Step 3- Start Your Own Group– Start your own group around You Inc. and not your Business Inc.

Offer valuable content and resources to your group members.

Step 4- Your Friends Wall– Instead of posting a quick message on your friend’s wall saying “hi” or “join my business”-

Create a welcome video and tag your new friends in it.  This isn’t the time to pitch your products. Introduce yourself and let people know that you are here to help them.

Step 5- Broadcasting Messages– Broadcast messages only to your group members.

Don’t you hate when someone tag you into a message about their opportunity? Remember the law of attraction: spammers attract after their own kind and leaders attract after their own kind.

No one likes a spammer, remember the law of average.  People only join leaders.

Step 6- Cross Promote Your Group– Contact other group members in your niche
and offer to invite your group members to their group if they will do the same
thing.
